Rethinking shopping for beauty

First of all, let me just say how much of a skin care and make-up hoarder I am. I want to try everything the second it is launched and I do have the best excuse in the world to do it: I am a make-up artist and I need to keep up with the times, isn't it? But just in case you have another type of career, being a consumer in the beauty industry requires a rethink of your shopping habits if you want to stay away from draining your bank account or filling up your cupboards with products you might or might not use.
Impulse shoppers are a marketer’s dream aka easy prey so try and stay away from any shiny billboards boasting with over the top unrealistic promises.
There are a few things to consider before you get lost online on Lookfantastic, Cultbeaty, etc or in Sephora, and here are the most important tips:
  • Is the product meant for your skin type? If you don’t know what that is, please check my blog post here.
  • Can I get it cheaper elsewhere (Press the shopping tag on Google, you will be amazed at the price differences on different websites)
  • Do you want the BRAND or the DUPE doing the same thing? Ask yourself who do you want to impress after all and rest assured there is always a more affordable item out there, you just need to find it.
  • Do the colours work for you? When thinking of buying a lipstick, eyeshadow palette, blusher did you get a chance to try them on? These days there are online platforms, apps to allow you to try make-up virtually so that when you commit to buying, you will be sure to get the most use of the product.
The way I approach beauty overall with The Make-up Edit is being mindful about what and how much we buy in order to have the right amount of skincare and make-up items. This is why I will always put forward the multitaskers, effective and staple/ legendary status products.
